Nepali (or, Nepalese) is the official language of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal – previously called the Kingdom of Nepal. The language used to be known as Gorkhali – the language of the Gorkhas, natives of the Himalayan Kingdom.

More than 20 million people the world over, speak Nepali as their first language. In Nepal itself, over 75% of the population speaks Nepali. Sikkim, a neighboring country, has an estimated population of 500,000 native Nepali speakers. Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts in West Bengal, India have a population of over 1,400,000 Nepali speakers. There is a sizeable population of Nepali speaking people in the North Eastern states of India - Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram, not to mention their growing numbers in all the Indian metros.
